Origins of To Boldly Preserve

Collecting and preserving the history of space exploration face three unprecedented major challenges and opportunities.
  1. How can historians and archivists convince the sharply expanding space industry community about the importance of collecting and preserving their history?
  2. How can historians and archivists work with retiring generations of spaceflight related researchers, engineers, technicians, administrators and users to record their stories?
  3. How can historians and archivists harness new forms of electronic communication to capture contemporary events and ensure they can be accessed in the future?
To explore these issues, the National Science Foundation funded “To Boldly Preserve: Archiving the Next Half-Century of Spaceflight” (TBP). This organization brought nearly 100 historians, archivists, and museum curators together with representatives of the space industry, records management, digital humanities, and libraries to examine the critical issues facing historical preservation efforts. The topics of creating, collecting, preserving, and accessing space archives were discussed at the first To Boldly Preserve Conference on March 1-2, 2018. Visit the Conferences page to learn more about what was discussed at the 2018 Conference.

About the Logo

What would a conference about space history be without its own mission patch? Dean Zhu of Texas A&M University created this logo. The crossed pen and microphone signify the tools of the historian. The Latin praeteritio temporis futura translates as “from the past, the future.”
